Every year the 25 editors of Elle Decoration International award designs in 14 categories,
and in 2016 the Elle Decoration Swedish Design award for Chair of the Year was given to
David Ericsson for his Madonna chair.
The young designer, who graduated from Carl Malmsten Furniture Studies in 2010, and
then started his own studio, finds inspiration in Swedish, European and ancient furniture.

In selecting materials for the Madonna chair Ericsson utilized his favorite beechwood.
He created slim beech poles which were milled into shape, and molded the curved
seat and back rest from beech veneer.
Created for the furniture company Garsnas, the Madonna chair is available with or
without armrests. It can be purchased in natural unstained beechwood, or stained
black or russet colors. The seat options are beechwood veneer or vegetable-tanned

The Madonna chair also won the Swedish Residence Stora Frompis Award in 2015
as well as the Furniture of the year Aretsrum 2016. A triple winner.

Who doesn’t like to sit in an award winning chair? Might as well be selective about where to park
your seat. There’s the potential that the chair may just become a future furniture icon although
that might mean you may see the chair just about everywhere. In the case of the Madonna
chair, that would be a good thing.
